Chapter Nineteen

Alex

We took the most direct route to the holo-deck, and I struggled to keep my emotions in check. Void, I was home. I recognized everything. The steel walls, the dents and the stories behind them. The shaky lighting, the name plaques indicating what family lived where. The familiar sounds and smells. The only difference was the empty hallways. They’d never been empty when I’d lived here, which brought me back to the danger we were still in.

I kept a hand tucked into Mastrodai’s belt, guiding him as he followed us backward. I kept my other hand in Leopold’s belt, linking the three of us. I didn’t like the scowls and glares, especially not on faces I’d known since childhood. Names swam in my mind, latching onto each person I recognized. I should have expected them to consider me an enemy but I’d naively hoped they’d see me and understand I’d never put them in harm’s way. That they’d associate their memories and trust in me and apply it to my husbands.

Void, that word had just popped out of my mouth, but as soon as I’d voiced it, I knew it was true. Without ceremony or any legality behind it, I considered myself married to Leopold and Mastrodai. I was their wife. We’d made promises to each other, we’d expressed our commitment so many times, it was foolish to deny our bond. Despite feeling Leopold stiffen when I’d said the word, I knew he couldn’t deny it. He’d just have to get used to it.

I didn’t know how much Mastrodai had understood of our exchange, since we’d spoken in a modified dialect of Terran. Despite my instruction, he might have only understood the gist.

I ached to hold Dar again. I was also itching to see Bor and the others. Their welcome couldn’t be any worse than having weapons drawn on me.

We reached the holo-deck and the door slid open.

“Alex!”

I whipped around to see Bor charging down the hallway with Darius at his heels. His green eyes were bright with a manic glee and his brown hair was as messy as ever. His uniform was rumbled and half secure. He looked as though he’d been awakened from a dead sleep and barely remembered to put on his shoes.

“Bor, stop!”

“Alex!” He collided with the soldiers and tried to push them out of his way, his gaze latched onto me. They pushed him back with a few gripes and insults. I doubted he heard them.

“Holy shit it’s really you!” He grinned wide and continued to shove.

“Bor, stop it.” Darius tried to pull him back.

“Enough, soldier!” Malcolm barked as he stomped past us.

“That’s my sister! Sir, that’s my sister!”

“Yes, I know who she is. You’ll have your reunion later. Control yourself, now!”

Bor’s expression was sour as he backed down and let Darius pull him away from the soldiers.

I caught his gaze and mouthed, “I love you.”

His eyes misted and he mouthed back, “I love you, too.”

I yearned to run into his arms. They were both young men, taller than me now.
